Well made and very helpful for transferring from Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 May 15, 2010 Michelle (Minnesoooota) Like others have said, this cable does not appear as it does in the product photo. It is clear, with a burly silver transfer cable running through it. Visually, it looks great.
Even better, this cable fits a much-needed niche for Mac users transferring from an older Firewire 400 machine to a Firewire 800 machine, or anyone using a Firewire 400-based external hard drive with a Firewire 800-based machine.
The ends of the plugs are solid and fit nicely into the female parts of my machines. They do not have any wiggle or play, as some reviewers have suggested.
Data is currently transferring from my old machine to my new machine at a rate of about 1 GB/minute. I'm not certain if this is as fast as regular Firewire 400, but for most purposes, this should be fast enough.
I have also used this cable with my older Iomega eGo Firewire & USB 2.0 external hard drive (http://www.amazon.com/Iomega-FireWire-Portable-External-34403/dp/B001C5AJLM/ref=cm_cr-mr-title), which requires power transfer through the Firewire cable. This cable works with no issues for that application.
You need this cable and you know they sell this sort of thing for much more at the Apple store; pick this one up and be happy!
Speedy delivery, but what I really wanted... March 20, 2010 Benjamin G. Beekman (Portland, OR United States) Speedy delivery, but what I really wanted was a Firewire 800 to 800 cable, not an adapter between 800 and 400. Though this was admittedly partially my fault due to not paying enough attention to the full titles of the products, their product descriptions and organization of their different cables could be a little clearer regarding the details of what I was buying.
For new Macs that need Firewire February 20, 2010 Tracey Lawrence (Ringwood, NJ USA) An excellent cable at the right price. Allows you to use Firewire 400 with the newer FW 800 ports built in to newer Macs. Works great. Arrived quickly.
Worked perfectly on a G4 to i7 iMac migration December 15, 2009 korova (Varosha) I used this cable for running Mac OS X Migration Assistant from a G4 iMac with System 10.5.8 to an i7 iMac with System 10.6.2 .
I had no problems whatsoever. The cable easily and securely fit into the Firewire 400 port on the G4 and into the Firewire 800 port on the i7.
The cable itself is sturdily built, especially considering the price, but the one I received differs cosmetically from the product description above. My cable has clear plastic jacketing and the braided shielding is visible. Personally, I think it looks better than the opaque off-white cables in the product image.
Bottom line: indispensable for anybody migrating from a Firewire 400 Mac to a Firewire 800 Mac.
Just worked at the right price December 9, 2009 E. Lee (San Francisco, CA) I used this cable to use the Migration Assistant tool from my old Imac G5 to my current 2009 model. Worked perfectly.
