 Fast File Transfer with LapLink for Windows 7 July 22, 2010

I did not buy this cable to transfer files and programs from an old computer to a new computer. Rather, I bought it to use with LapLink for Windows 7 to transfer large amounts of data between my desktop and my laptop, both of which are running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit.
I've used LapLink for years to synchronize data between my desktop, which I use in my home office, and my laptop, which I take on the road. LapLink recently released an update for Windows 7, which I installed. Works great, although for me the are no significant differences between it and earlier versions -- except I no longer get an irrelevant error message when starting the program.
LapLink sells a USB2 cable for transferring files between computers, which they say is the fastest means of transfer. Although it's included with some of the software they sell, it's not included with the upgrade, and they want $39.95 for it plus $12.95 shipping, a total of $52.90. I thought that a bit steep, so I decided to try the Belkin USB2 computer-to-computer cable, which was only $27.84 from Amazon with no tax and free shipping. Works great with LapLink. BTW, the Belkin cable is eight feet long, which is two feet longer than the one sold by LapLink.
I tested the speed of transfers using my home LAN network versus the USB2 cable. My laptop is connected to the LAN by wireless N and has "excellent" signal strength as it's only a couple of feet from the router. I selected a directory with 2,552,136,848 bytes for the test, deleting the files from the laptop, then transferring them from the desktop to the laptop. I repeated the test with the same files for both the LAN and USB2 connections. Using the LAN, the transfer took 31 minutes 17 seconds at a rate of 10,877,400 bps. With the Belkin USB2 cable, it took only 2 minutes 16 seconds at a rate of 150,125,500 bps (stats per LapLink's summary window). No brainer! This will be a great help to me when I'm trying to get out of the house in the morning and when I return at night.
Installation of the Belkin USB2 cable for THIS purpose is simple. First, toss the CD with the software in the trash. Second, connect one end of the cable to your computer and allow Windows to find the driver, which takes only a few seconds. Third, unplug the cable from the one computer and plug it into the other computer, allowing the second computer to find and install the driver. Fourth, connect the cable to both computers. Fifth, start LapLink on one computer, then on the other. If the connection over the USB2 cable is not made automatically, check your port settings and activate the USB port. That's it. All file transfer functions of LapLink should now work using the USB2 cable.
HOWEVER, note that any existing LapLink exchange agents won't work with the USB2 cable -- they look for the connection that was active when you recorded them. Rather, you have to create new exchange agents while the computers are connected via the USB2 cable.

the belkin EASY transfer cable took awhile to transfer every thing from my XP to windows 7 but it worked fantastic just took a little time.

This was an excellent purchase. Best Buy and Walmart had the same cable for two times more than I purchased it on Amazon.

I purchased this cable because it looked like an easy way to transfer data to my new computer. I tried several times and got lots of error messages. I ended up doing it the old fashioned way. Didn't work for me.

It does a great job transfering data files like images etc. I had a lot of untraditional places to store things like my music is all at C:/My Music instead of My Documents. It found it all and moved it over. Website data, psds, everything.
I certainly could have done this myself via network, but it was made easy by this device. Start it and walk away for a few hours.
It did not do much of any program transfering. I had hoped to not be re-installing everything. It managed to move my Outlook mail file, but not import, and when I did import, was very weird and ended up importing all messages twice.
I would say it saved me half a day sorting through my old hard drive for all the folders I wanted and moving them. Plus, Windows 7 is very picky and it might have been far more difficult than I imagine.
